The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
